31 Days of Renfield: Day 5

“This is one of the nice rats. Her name is Alice. There are three all together
that switch off on being the rat in Dracula. This year they got
a really nice upgraded cage. It’s called a rat hotel and has multiple levels.
The rats spend the whole rehearsal process with us in the room and then
live backstage for the run of the show. Ryan Westwood who plays Briggs this year and does
the rat handling in the show really loves rats and had several as pets.
Stage management has an emergency plan if a rat escapes during the show.
Kim, our stage manager, will stop the show, turn the house lights up and
tell all audience members to lift up their feet so that the rat doesn’t get crushed.
This has never happened. But you never know.”
